Kempston

Kempston was once known as the largest village in England and is now a town with its own Town Council. It has a population of about 20,000, and together with Bedford, it forms an urban area with around 100,000 residents. Kempston is well known for its strong ‘community feel’.  Kempston is also the home to the Bedfordshire Police Headquarters, which covers all of Bedford, Luton and Dunstable as well as the Road Traffic Headquarters.

History of Kempston

Kempston is the home of the historic building “The Keep” which was built in 1875 and is a grade II listed building. The keep was built to resemble a castle. The “King William IV” public house is also grade II listed and was built in 1600s, Tollers regularly host a ‘Tollers Coffee Morning’ at the venue, where locals can drop in to discuss legal issues with the Tollers team.

Kempston was first mentioned in the Doomsday Book as Camestone. The Town is steeped in history including links to William the Conqueror, who after his victory at the battle of Hastings gave Kempston to his niece Judith de Baliol. A later inhabitant of Kempston, for a time, was John de Balliol (5th Baron) who founded the Balliol College in Oxford in around 1262, he was married to Devorguilla of Galloway and their son John Balliol became King of Scotland in 1292 for a short time. To mark these associations, you can even find a street named Balliol Road in the town. Another well known associate of Kempston was the Christian writer and Preacher John Bunyan the writer of Pilgrims Progress, who was born just outside of the town in the village of Harrowden and had strong connections with Kempston.
